My son is the greatest joy in my life. I think everyone deserves to experience that. The love for and of a child is the greatest gift in the world and its heartbreaking to know some people are deprived of that gift. It seems so unfair that while some are faced with unwanted pregnancies others who desperately yearn for a child are denied. In my case, it took me four months to get pregnant and each month that first spot of blood of my period arrived I cried. My weeks of hopes were crushed in an instant and I felt a great sense of loss. It might sound like a fairy tale ending: a couple struggles and will finally get their child, but I won’t sugar coat things. Of course there are no guarantees. Parents choosing surrogacy are not at the end of their troubles. Parents will still have anxious and emotional times. In my case, I had an embryo transfer and got pregnant. Wonderful, right? Not yet. The first ultrasound showed the fetus might be abnormal and a week later the heart beat was gone. More devastation for the parents after they think they’ve found their answer in a surrogate. Fortunately, we tried again with embryos they had frozen and this time the fetus is progressing perfectly. It still hasn’t been worry free. I’ll be honest, there have been times- like when I took my 112th injection or was so nauseous I couldn’t even get up- that I asked myself, “What were you thinking?” Then the moment passes and I realize the big picture and one more injection doesn’t seem so bad.
