People often ask, “How does someone even get involved with surrogacy.”  I think for each of us surrogates, that answer varies greatly. For me, it all started with family and an offer I never thought I would make. About ten years ago I was planning the birth of my second son. My then sister in law was experiencing extreme difficulty in her journey to conceive. They had been trying for years, even went down the road of IVF.Nothing was working for her, and I watched her get defeated time and time again. I invited her to be in the room when I was going to deliver my son; she thought it was just to be supportive and included. After he was born and I let her hold him in her arms, I offered to carry a baby for her. I had no idea what that offer would entail or what trials and tribulations would accompany such an offer, but I offered it wholeheartedly. Seeing the look on her face and the tears that ran down her face told me it was the right decision. After I had recovered I began researching IVF and surrogacy in case she decided to take me up on it. I would read stories and watch videos of intended parents talking about what this process meant to them and did for them. I knew in my heart this was meant for me. In the meantime, I went back to college full time and continued to raise my kids. We were also blessed with our third and final baby.  In that time, God had a plan for my sister in law as well. She stopped all IVF treatments and began to come to grips with maybe it wasn’t in the cards for her. Little did we all know, it was in the cards just when the timing was meant to be. Later the following year, she gave birth to a little girl on Christmas Day!

A few years went by, but the desire still held true in my heart. I never could let it go or forget about it. It was placed on my heart so heavily. I knew it had to be something bigger calling me to serve, so I decided to look into it and found an agency. I began the process with them and kept hitting these roadblocks along the way. It wasn’t a smooth process or an easy one. I started to doubt this decision and question was I doing the right thing. If this was meant to be, why was everything screaming no at me? Then I talked to my friend Lauren Stevens. She was working with another agency, A Perfect Match, and she told me about her experience with them. It was far from what I was going through with mine. She told me about the staff and how amazing they were to work with. About her intended parents and how well they were matched for one another. So I gave them a call and after speaking with Rose, I knew what I needed to do. I stopped the process with the other agency and began working with A Perfect Match, Inc. It was the best decision I ever could have made!

The reasons that bring us into this incredible journey are not nearly as important as the fact that we are here. There are so many families in need of this miraculous gift that only we can give. Becoming a mother changed my life. It truly changed me and made me a better person. I could not imagine someone telling me that this life as a mother wasn’t a possibility for me. That is why I do this. That is why I am so invested and such a believer in the journey. What gift could ever compare? The gift of family is the ultimate gift, and we get to be a small part of that. Sometimes I am not sure who is receiving the better deal here, them or us. It’s a blessing, to say the least
